Load balancing and server clustering

Many big organization having huge traffic on their website usually prefer to have load balance servers. Using this technology you can distribute server load on multiple server so as to get optimal response time and good server performance. The concept of load balancing is very simple but it’s a bit complex to implement practically. You can get many vendors offering such load balancing solutions, they may be implementing this technique in different ways.

Load balancing and server clustering :
You can use server clustering technique in which you will distribute workload within several computers in a cluster server. Traditional definition of server clustering consist of two or more servers that operate and are managed as if they were a single entity.
Using this technique all servers which are in clustered can access one another disk data. There are special software (like MSCS, Microsoft Cluster Server) which can be used to manage the systems, they will automatically detect the failure of any system and can provide failover/recovery if any error occurs in network. Sometime such server clustering is also termed as “ Server Farms” usually big corporate websites such as yahoo, Google etc… uses multiple servers in a Web farm to handle their huge volume of traffic.

Implementation [ Hardware vs. software implementations ]
You can implement such load balancing technology using software as well as suing some special hardware. Using popular Operating systems such as Windows NT/2000 and Red Hat’s Linux OS you can implement software-based load balancing technology on your server network. If you want there are many software packages such as Resonate which can be used for setting up load balanced servers. If you want you can also use special hardware devices which can be used to setup load balance servers. There are many vendors who can offer you such special hardware used to implement such load balance network. These are special harware devices which are based on switching technology and can be used to setup load balance server network.  There are many such special Load balancing switches and routers available in market. You can use such special hardware from Cisco, Radware, Foundary, Alteon, and other vendors each of them uses variety of algorithms to distribute TCP/IP requests among a group of servers. You can also refer such Load balancing switches as content switches and content directors. Most load balancing solutions used a DNS round-robin algorithm.
